I was pretty blind as a kid. My myopia wasn't discovered until I was nine, but this disability had the advantage of developing unusually heightened close-up vision. So half of my developing years were spent examining the world like I had a macro lens attached to my retinas. Much of my object and nature photography now seems to be an attempt to recapture that close examination. A flower in a field can be beautiful, but the tiny parts that create that bigger object can be even more luscious, exciting, and sometimes even wonderfully grotesque. My impaired vision also left me relying on general outlines to distinguish objects and people from one another. This method of interpreting the world can be seen in my photos utilizing shadows and patterns. The resulting alienation from not fully seeing the people around me also can be seen in my rare photos of people; they are often alone, even when in the midst of crowds, and often seen as objects via keeping them anonymous. The presentation of subjects in my photos is generally how I first find them, without contrived set-ups, backgrounds, or wild colors. I will adjust colors to make up for the camera's inadequacies, but except for black and whites, I never alter colors from how I originally found them. My work is most frequently influenced by Imogen Cunningham, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Andre Kertesz. I have been a part of many juried street and gallery showings where I showed framed diptychs and triptychs. However, at stART I will only have matted prints for ease in carrying and a lower price point. I will be happy to show how the pieces can be grouped or discuss which items might fit your decor.
