A biochemist by education, a manager of a healthcare audit department by profession, and a member of the Board of Directors at Great Brook Valley Health Center in Worcester, MA; Gail Hormats is an abstract artist and a jeweler. Her work finds expression in pen and ink, watercolors, oils, molten glass, beads, and metals. She prefers large sweeping expanses, but has worked contentedly on small, intimate landscapes that both are and are not representationalMs. Hormats’ art training occurred in the Dragonflies Studio, where she apprenticed with artist, Susan Champeny. She furthered her art training by taking master classes world wide She, together with artists Susan Champeny and D. Christine Benders, began 1/3 Studio to explore artistic synergy. Ms. Hormats’ work is rich with color and texture. She is drawn to the play and juxtaposition of light, fascinated by the seductive patterns in nature. She has experimented in use of non-traditional materials, including wiring knitting needles and bronze beads to the canvas. Glass is Ms. Hormats’ newest creative medium. When growing up, her father created scientific glass for his laboratory, and blew little glass swans for the home. Ms. Hormats, however, never tried her hand with molten sand and chemicals until recently. Three years ago, she took a short course in glass-bead making and has not looked back. She is currently experimenting with melding art glass beads and oil paints into bas relief style paintings.
